Gangstar Rio: City of Saints, what a title. It’s like Gameloft felt like banking off of the upcoming release of both Saint’s Row 3 and Grand Theft Auto III. It’s no secret that the developer is known for making clones of successful IPs for the iOS. Last month we were graced with the Call of Duty version, Modern Combat 3. We tend to like these games and are glad to have Gameloft bringing these sorts of games to our favorite portable gaming platform.

This is a sandbox game where you can roam anywhere you want. You can do missions, or not. Do whatever you want. Kill whoever you want, take any vehicle you want. Yah it’s a lot like Grand Theft Auto, but to be fair Gameloft isn’t the first developer to copy that model.

We’ve played the other Gangstar games and immediately we noticed a difference with this game, the graphics were much better. You have many of options in driving a vehicle, but I prefer using the on-screen wheel and pedals. Default is accelerometer with pedals for gas and brake. There are a couple of other options as well. For us, driving could have been the deal-breaker because we love driving crazy in this sort of game. The coolest addition to this game type was an ATV, we love it. Don’t get us wrong we love driving the really fast cars as much as the next guy, but give us some off-road action any day.

we can’t speak to how long this game is, but it seems like a lot of time could be spent playing it. The downside of this game is that there is no multiplayer. We’re not counting off for that because we don’t care about multiplayer in this type of game, unless it’s co-op. Yes Gameloft, we would like to see co-op in this game, please!

Overall this is the best sandbox game we’ve seen from Gameloft and recommend a download if you like being naughty.

When this app hit the store we thought the name looked familiar.Tac Nayn is the evil version of Nyan Cat.  If you’ve played Nyan Cat: Lost in Space, you’ll recognize the character as the other playable skin in the game.  To put it into perspective, in that game when Nyan Cat gets the Superman cape powerup, he flies. When Tac Nayn gets the same powerup he becomes Darth Vader Kitteh.

At first glance, Tac Nayn: Demolition Nayn looks like just another jumping game.  Playing the game, instantly you find out how wrong that impression is.  First off, Tac Nayn enters from the right side of the screen and dashes towards the left side runs instead of the normal left to right found in most everything we do as Westerners.. In addition to jumping over tiny ravines, the player must tap on enemies flying past Tac.  If the enemies fly off-screen then the player will lose a life.  You start off with five lives but you can gain extra lives by tapping on Tac Nayn clones that fly forward randomly during the game.

Any self-respecting jumping game wouldn’t be complete without power-ups.  Sadly no flying capes as of yet, but Tac gets fun toys like rockets and even lazer eyes!!!  You’ll also get magnets that gather up enemies and explode after a few seconds, explosive barrels and wings that make you fly.  Collecting food gets the player bonus points.

Possibly the most humorous part of the game are the different animals that are made out of food like cakes, muffins, cheese, and hot dogs.

Overall this is a fun and addictive game.  It’s got a retro style to the graphics and a nice rockin soundtrack.  If you liked Nyan Cat: Lost in Space, you’ll love this game.

Have you ever wished you had a girlfriend that you could turn off when you’d rather do something else?  With My Virtual Girlfriend, you can.

This dating simulation game custom creates virtual girls according the to different characteristics that the player specifies about himself/herself. Initially the player will be given three choice of girls to date, but you can choose to get another batch.  After choosing the girl you want to date, you’ll start the courting session.

You’ll be able to perform actions like compliment, insult, wink, tell a joke and more.  In addition the player will be able to go on activities like play video games, walk in the park, etc.  To start out the activities are free, but as you level they tend to cost in-game money.  In-game money can be earned by performing activities like recycling.

The player is allowed to interact with the girlfriend too.  You can touch her, but be careful not to try too early or she’ll breakup with you and game over. Once you get in good with her, you’ll be able to kiss her, slap her, tickle her  Maybe if you make it to a really high level you’ll be able to do other things? Bow chicky wow wow.

Speaking prompts her to open a line of dialogue with you.  From that you can agree, disagree, give a meh response, sad face or stick your tongue out. Be careful, your responses can either make or break your relationship very quickly.

A New update includes the ability to give your girlfriend the “Z Virus” which will turn her into a zombie.  Don’t worry, they won’t bite….hard.  Their appearance changes and they talk about wanting brains.  Also the player now has the ability to take a girlfriend to a scary house, in theme with the zombie addition and Halloween season.

Overall this is a fun simulation game.  The graphics are simliar to the Sims series and the soundtrack is very catchy.  There are tons of levels in the relationship and each one unlocks new actions and activities.  If you’re a fan of simulation games, definitely give this one a shot, you may even get lucky.

Fruit Ninja, it’s everywhere.  It’s an IP that stands alongside Angry Birds as the most downloaded game on the iOS and recently it made a juicy splash onto XBOX Live Arcade with Kinect integration.

Enter it’s newest iteration, Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots. The game is a tie-in to the new Shrek spin-off movie, “Puss in Boots”.

The game has a Survival or “Desperado” mode in which you get 3 lives and you must slice fruit while avoiding bombs.  The more fruit you slice in a straight swipe, the more points you get.  If you see a glowing bean fly across the screen make sure and hit that as you’ll gain a life back.

The second mode, “Bandito” has tons of different mini-games that are increasingly harder as you traverse the gauntlet of challenges that lie ahead.  If you pass all 16 levels of the in this mode, you will have face-off against a most formidable opponent.  The elusive, pinata.  Yup, that’s right the finale is a pinata, it sounds lame, but we found it a heck of a lot of fun to slice around for the time given.  On our second run through this mode, we noticed that the levels are randomized and that there were more than the 16 levels than we played our previous attempt.  This adds a lot of replay value to the game.

When you unlock certain achievements, you will also unlock new blades and backgrounds.  All of which are exclusive to this version of the game.  If you watch the video review, you’ll see I unlocked the Firework blade, which is a lot of fun.  If you’re competitive you now have the option of using Game Center or Open Feint for your leaderboards.

Overall this is a great game with beautiful visuals accompanied by fun and addictive gameplay.  The only downside I saw was there was no multipler as of yet, but hopefully the developer will add this to an update at a later time.  If you like Fruit Ninja, you’ll love this sequel that compliments the original very well.  Oh and one more thing, they added tomatoes to this game 😉

This game was reviewed on an iPad 2 using the HD version of the game which is available at $1.99

Puss in Boots hits theaters October 28, 2011 and is a prequel to his appearance in the Shrek movies.

Just when we finally got the Nyan Cat song out of our heads, here comes another spin-off game inspired by the YouTube viral video. This time Nyan Cat sings its never-ending infectious tune while racking up a high score in this side-scrolling jump game. Nyan Cat is hungry from all that singing and you’ll need to jump from platform to platform whilst gathering foodz and drinkz for the internet phenom.

The power ups in this Doodle Jump like game took us by surprise. Of course there is the not uncommon rocket, multiplyer and flying power ups. But there are two that stood out, way way out. One powerup is a joint that gets Nyan Cat high, not only changing his appearance to a green raggae cat, but it also makes the screen a bit wavy and slow moving. In addition, there is a pill that gives NC super speed while causing a hallucination of a giant version of himself moving about on the screen.

In addition to playing as Nyan Cat there is the Bizarro of the Nyan Cat world, Tac Nyan. Similiarly when Tac Nyan picks up the Superman powerup he turns into a flying Darth Vader.

Overall this is a fun high-score jumping game for all ages. Be warned, the biggest challenge is to keep playing while the Nyan Cat song loops for infinity. The initial game only comes with one level, currently there are two more which can be purchased individually for $.99 . Other in-app purchases include Movie, Nationality and Profession skins, each pack costing $.99

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
