A few weeks ago, we reviewed a game that set the bar higher for other iOS developers. Little did we know, Modern Combat 3 : Fallen Nation would answer that call without even hearing it. The bar hasn’t just been raised with this game, it’s been vaulted. Modern Combat 3 is just so much better than anything else we’ve every seen in the shooter genre.
The graphics in this game are so flawless, it feels like we’re playing something on XBOX 360 or PS3, instead of an iPad. The controls are the typical left thumbstick to move around and use of most of the right part of the screen to move and aim. There is a button to fire, one to crouch, one to run, and another for grenades. A button towards the top allows the player to switch weapons and/or reload. Basically it’s the same control scheme as previous Modern Combat games. The controls are easy to learn even if you’ve never played the series before.
The campaign was played very briefly and what we experienced was fast paced and it was only the tutorial level. We can’t wait to dive in and start a Let’s Play series on it. While a lot of our friends are playing Battlefield 3, we opted to wait for this and we’re happy with our $7 game compared to a $60 game. Especially with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Halo: Combat Evolved 10th Anniversary right around the corner.
Multiplayer had a great consistency in the connection via wi-fi. We experienced no lag at all while playing it. The game allows up to twelve players in a lobby and there are six maps and seven game modes to play at launch.
This is a great time to own an iOS device that is a recent generation. If you don’t have something past a 4th generation iPod, I’d suggest it’s time to upgrade for games like this one, because you should expect to see more like it. Will it run on older models? Probably. Will it run smoothly on those older models? Most likely not. With anything older, we’d expect lots of crashes. Sorry kids time to ask Santa for a new iPod, iPhone or iPad.
